Success Stories

We asked a few of our youth to share their experiences and how attending LCYC programs has benefitted them. Here is what a few of them had to say:

  1. What has changed for you as a result of attending LCYC programs?

“Attending LCYC and participating in the programs has changed my life in multiple ways. It has opened up my views of other people. I have made a lot of friends with other teens and the leaders. The youth centre offers a lot of opportunities for kids who come. I have examples. This past summer I didn’t get to go camping with my family. We usually go every year. When my family didn’t go, my LCYC family did. They took us camping for almost a school week’s length of time. The other example I have is this Christmas. This year my family made the decision to not put up the same type of tree. It was an electric tree. I love putting ornaments on the tree but I didn’t get to do that so I went to the centre and helped decorate the LCYC tree. Along with these, I love the impact that the LCYC peeps have had on me. They give up so much of their time for us, it is a blessing”.

“Attending LCYC has given me travel experience I never thought I would get and has allowed me to participate in activities I thought I could never do.”

“I am now more open with others about what I want, and I am not as afraid to say how I feel.”

“The biggest thing that has changed for me since attending LCYC is my newfound capability of leadership roles, responsibilities, and the chance to meet new people and experience new things.”

  1. What have you learned about yourself since attending LCYC programs?

“I have learned so much about my friendships and my future and how to take care of myself. I have learned that even some adults care about us teenagers long enough to see that we aren’t that bad and troublesome, for the most part. I have learned that friendship can happen with multiple, varying age differences. LCYC people have helped me prepare for my future plans and with the NOW factor as well. I have learned self-image tips and healthy relationship stuff. I know from attending LCYC is an amount I’ll NEVER be able to give back to the full”.

“I am not as anti-social as I thought I was. At LCYC, I feel like I can be open and be myself.”

“I have learned how much I enjoy talking to people!”

“Since attending LCYC, I have gotten to know myself much better through the positive feedback I have received and the learning experiences I have gone through. Attending LCYC has helped me a lot with my self-esteem and being happy overall. I thoroughly enjoy programs LCYC offers for youth in our community and I hope the programs will continue to be offered for youth to come.”

Story from past staff members:

“I wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to work at the Youth Centre. In my first month of my practicum with the youth care worker program, I have learned a lot. I would not have discovered my passion for being a youth care worker if not for working at LCYC. So thank you for accepting me as a volunteer then hiring me as a program facilitator. I learned so much at the Youth Centre that I bring every day to my practicum and my classes”.
